History

S-West stands next to Natlab where technological history was written. The illustrious Physics Laboratory, where Einstein himself worked, was the birthplace of electronics giant, Philips, which has introduced so many technologies and products that are still very much part of our daily lives. Natlab is now the home of Plaza Futura culture and film centre, Baltan Laboratories, Eindhoven Architecture Centre, BROET and ‘De Zwarte Doos’ Film House.
SintLucas’s creative technology courses at VMBO and MBO levels are also held here, partly in a new building next to S-West.

Forbidden city
For decades, Strijp-S was a closed bastion ruled by Philips behind barriers, fences and security pass readers. It was where appliances, glass, cardboard and Philite (the Philips version of Bakelite) were manufactured and components stored. There was a boiler house and a machine room to keep everything running. The many factory buildings have largely been given a second life, serving now as places to work, exercise, shop, relax and live.
